Taken in 1937 by H.S. Wong, the photo of a crying baby sitting in the ruins of a Japanese train station while his dead mother lays just feet away swept across the world and put a face to the millions of people being killed by the war. 

Taken in 1992 by James Nachtwey, the photo shows the brute reality of the famine in Somalia during this time, when few people in the West cared about this problem.

Photographed in 1955 by David Jackson, the photo taken of Emmett Till after his gruesome murder shocked the world and sent forward a massive civil rights movement
